The solution many companies have developed? They hide a transponder key in the steering column so the remote starter can do its thing. Also completely negating the point of having the transponder system in the first place. I don't think car manufacturers think security systems will deter ALL thieves, just the dumber (majority) of them. A thief would have to rip out the entire dash to get at the Monsoon stereo in my 2004 Passat Wagon. Did earlier VWs have removable stereos?
It's on the side of the radio, an easy pull out with the dealer tools. Any dealer should be willing to look it up for free if you're on-site and can prove ownership. Mine took alot of tries and several code configs, all with an hour between each 2 tries. If the code your dealer tries doesn't work, I can dig up my notes, but oner of the LETTERS, a W I think, can change to give completely different codes. Before these codes, VW radios were a high theft item, taking 20 sec to remove with the tools!
Press and h old MODE and SCAN again till SAFE flashes again, if code is correct your radio will work. You have three tries to get it right then you have to wait around 30min to retry. If you don't have your code you can try to call a dealership and give them the number on the back of your deck, however they are not suppose to give out the codes over the phone. I had to call around ten dealerships till I found one in Iowa city,Iowa that gave me the code over the phone.
If you're not successful for whatever reason, you'll be locked-out again, and have to repeat this procedure. After code is entered, press right side of 'Seek' button for about 2 seconds, or until an audible signal is heard. If you hose up and get the wrong code.will go back to SAFE displayed. You will get another chance to enter the code. After 2 failed attempts, you have to wait 1 hour again for it to unlock. So carefully enter the correct code the first time. RudyVW answered 3 years ago Have just gone through this incredible hassle (thanks, VW!) on my old 1997 Passat GLX.
Release the buttons as soon as this number appears. • Refer to your Radio Card and use the station buttons ('1', '2', '3' and '4') to input the code. Use the '1' button to input the first digit of the code, the '2' button to input the second digit, and so on. • When the code appears on the display, press the 'MODE' and 'SCAN' buttons simultaneously and hold them until 'SAFE' appears on the radio display.
This was the last video I made before the power went out due to Hurricane Irene. Now it finally came back on 6 days later, so I can upload this! This video was made for YouTube user 16mmDJ, but it contains helpful information for anyone who is dealing with a 1990s or early 2000s Volkswagen car radio head unit. I provide instructions on how to enter the security code, how to remove the head unit, and details on the special antenna connector that VW and some other European carmakers used, including the adapters that are necessary to install an aftermarket head unit or external device with an RF modulator (CD changer, satellite radio tuner, etc.).
Radio re-set process: ____With ignition ON (engine can be running or not), turn radio ON (SAFE is displayed without blinking on radio). _____Turn ignition OFF, **but don't remove key.** Leave radio ON, so 'SAFE' continues to display. _____Leave key in ignition same position, and let car sit with 'SAFE' displayed for about an hour or longer.
